Cute as this toy is, the design makes it unsafe for teethers. It's all too easy for little finger, tongue, and lips to get pinched between the round beads and the elongated pieces. We took it out of circulation after our eight-month-old got her lower lip pinched hard enough to raise a large blood blister.
Beyond the safety factor, the dyes on the colored pieces bleed when they get wet. So if Baby chews on this for any length of time, you end up with stains not only on the natural wood pieces, but also all over Baby's face, hands, clothes, etc.

 Nice toy but not for teething Feb 15, 2009
I was looking for a wooden teether and wanted to get the plain maple one but my partner felt that our baby girl would prefer this one which was more colourful. Well she does like it and grasps it easily. I like the way it rattles. However the spaces between each segment make it impossible for baby to get her teeth into it and as such I would recommend this as a nice toy but certainly don't buy it if you need a teether.
