Beautifully crafted puzzle. Aug 03, 2011
By Marvela I've had this puzzle in my Montessori class for toddlers for two years and it has held up very well. It's a challenge for 2 year olds, but in a good way. I just have to help them separate the layers. I think this puzzle would be fun for the 2-6 age range. It is a beautiful, sturdy, educational, well-designed puzzle.
What a cool idea! Sep 14, 2009
By Denise Martin I wish the picture was more clear about how this puzzle is put together. Basically, there are three layers, each a bit larger than the last. The bottom layer is 3 pieces, and shows a girl and a boy planting seeds and preparing the soil. The second layer is 3 pieces with the same two kids, this time weeding and watering small plants. The top layer is 6 pieces, with the kids' faces grinning from among some very tall sunflowers.
The pieces are sturdy painted wood. They aren't classic "puzzle" shaped pieces, but are rather cut along edges of images in the picture.
My 2-yr-old is a puzzle fanatic, and loves this one. At first, I helped him by separating the bottom, middle, and top layers, so he could just concentrate on a few pieces at a time. We would talk about what the kids were doing in each picture, what things the plants needed (water, soil, sun), and how the plants were growing. (Now he can get the layers right with minimal assistance.) Great learning tool, both for the spatial stuff that you get from a puzzle, and for learning about a process over time such as the growth of plants.
These Chelona puzzles are expensive, I admit, but I'm nevertheless tempted to get him another one. They are just so gorgeous, well-made, and educational. Maybe the tadpole->frog or the house building one.
Love it! Sep 12, 2009
By D. Aubin Not only great for learning how to put together a puzzle, but multiple layers of puzzle. Colors are bright and puzzle is wood thus much longer lasting than cardboard. My kids love theirs and my niece loved this one that we bought her for her birthday.
