If you have a child who likes sewing and creating their own design, then this is the toy for them, (as opposed to lacing cards which 'require' a more rigid pattern). This light weight, easy to hold, wooden tree is riddled with holes and comes with two thick, long strings with a bead at one end. Leaves, squirrels, birds, and a fox are just some of the things that your child can sew onto the tree in any pattern they wish. The tree can be played with alone or can easily be incorporated into imaginitive play with doll or tree houses etc. The bottom of the box is 'inverted' so the leaves and 'accessories' can be poured into it and provides a workspace. The accessories come in a plastic ziplock which we replaced with a fabric drawstring bag. The parts are small and may pose a swallowing hazard, so I would go with the reccomendation and purchase for 3 and up.

Great toy but be careful with tiny pieces though Feb 01, 2010

This is a great toy. My 3 year old son loves it. Only down side is that the pieces are so small and definitely a choking hazard. Consequently, we don't get to play with it much because I can only let my older son use it when the my 1 year old is napping.

nice idea - but doesn't hold interest, and child doesn't necessarily get that he can criss-cross and make up as he goes....hard to keep all the little pieces in tact, wish there was some kind of storage box. wouldn't buy it again...

This is a great and very unique lacing board. My son, age 4, loves to attach the various items to the tree. I think he would've liked it younger and will continue to use it for quite some time. It did break fairly immediately (tree base came off of tree top) probably from being stepped on by one of my children. It is still completely usable, however, and my son actually requested that I not glue it so that he can attach the two parts himself.

I got this for my almost 4 year old last Xmas. I was more excited about it than she was. She found it frustrating as the cords are very long and hard to play with for short arms.
It is very well made but all those pretty leaves and animals are hard to keep in one place. It would be nice if it came with a nice storage bag, but since it doesn't a ziploc does the trick.
