I bought several of these with various patterns, a move I regret. I should have bought several of the same design, because my kids love them so much that they fight over which one they're going to eat with. I had actually expected it to be a little thicker and padded, but they are flat and thin, about the thickness of a CD but flexible- they can be rolled up. They hold up well to spills, although chewing on it does cause some wear and tear.

No doubt Crocodile Creek does a great job with creating engaging product visuals. I purchased these in various designs for use with my under-5 kids. With normal use, the images lasted only a few days before areas started to rub away. For example, I missed a Cheerio when wiping down the mats after breakfast. When I went back to clean it later, the image scraped off in a circle with the "o." Easy to see how a curious child would just as easily eat that Cheerio with printing attached. I'm not one who gets overly worked up about all-natural products, but it makes me mad to see these in stores when the manufacturer is being so irresponsible. Let's assume the printing is food-safe. Even then, why do they only last a few uses? They are not marketed as disposable.

It's the same with all Crocodile Creek placemats. We have six. Our 3-year old LOVES them and it really keeps him sitting longer at the dining room table.
Yes, I keep buying them. And I buy them for gifts too.
BUT the image does rub off. Just from the toddler writing over it with his fork, whatever. I clean them off with a damp paper towel and don't let it sit (that's just how I roll, clean up immediately). And it still is coming off.
So, I had them laminated at Kinkos. Yes, it was expensive. But I want them to last through my other kids and they won't without the lamination. The actual placemat is fine. It's the image printed on top that's coming off.
If you're buying these for one child for a couple years, go for it. If you want them to last looking good, you'll need to laminate. But then crusty food could stay on forever with no worries.

My son is thrilled to be able to learn all the names for the vehicles and such on the placemat! It saves us a lot of complaining when he decides not to eat but to play at the table.
I was surprised at how durable it was and the vinyl (yes! Vinyl!) is heavier than I thought it would be. It stays put, no sliding and is easy to clean.
I don't let me kid eat right off the table, as this is for my kid who eats from dishes. I would suggest not to let a baby use these, but an older kids (2+).

My nephew had this exact placemat, and the ink comes off every time we wipe it. (whether we use Simple Green, water, or wiping off orange juice) No one feels comfortable letting a toddler eat food off a placemat that has its paint coming off. Who knows what's in the paint? The educational value is great, though - they just need to find a better way to manufacture a child's product!
