 Nice Play Food Option for Younger Children Sep 12, 2009

We bought these in a set with Educo Gourmet Chef Kitchen and Educo Gourmet Chef Cookware. However, they are fantastic little foods on their own.
I love that there is the more unusual eggplant with this set, the tomato is really attractive in real life and has small seeds inside - a nice touch. The onion is very pretty too, and the French bread is just too cool. The mushrooms are cute, and might be a borderline choking hazard, where every other item seems absolutely safe even when "cut" in pieces. The cheeses, pizza and bread slices are alright, look real enough and will surely please the kids, but are not the best of the lot.
Here are the dimensions of the foods. I wish I'd had these before we purchased them. I was so (needlessly) nervous they'd be too small for our 18-month old.
Pizza: 3" diameter
Sliced Bread: 2.75" x 2"
Cheese: 2.25" x 1.75" (at widest point)
Mushrooms: 1.25" x 1.25"
Whole Onion: 2" x 1.5"
Whole Carrot: 4.5" length
Whole Eggplant: 4.5" length
Whole Tomato: 2" diameter (nearly sphere shaped)
Egg: 2.25" - 2.75" diameter (irregular edges)
Cutting Board: 6" x 8"
Knife: 5" long
Too, Hape seems to be an above average company in terms of safety. All paints, glues and stains are imported from Germany, and wood is imported from Russia. The items are assembled and manufactured in China, but supervision of the process seems to be better than most companies.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these play foods, particularly to the under-age-two group.

We just received this set and I know that my little one will like playing with it because we already have a similar one.
The thing that disturbs me is the smell. It is stated on the box that the paint is non-toxic. Well,the bread and tomato have a smell to them. As for the soy-ink mentioned in other reviews, on the box it says that the soy ink is used on the BOX itself. So, it is not clear what type of paint is used on the toys, which would be more important to me. Paying a premium for quality, I would like to get toys with paint that does not smell.
We own a similar set by PLAN TOYS and it has a superior quality and NO smell. Their fruits and veggies NEVER smelled, even when I opened the box first. I tasted both toys (sounds crazy, but what a parent would not do for a little one),since my baby bites them, and while PLAN TOYS did not have a flavor, EDUCO set had a bitter one - not good either.
As for the food itself,I would not call any of the items a chocking hazard, but never sure what a kid might do next. My favorites are tomato, cheese, egg, and eggplant. Onion does not look realistic. And what is wrong with the carrot?! Does not look realistic as well. PLAN TOY's one actually looks like carrot.
Overall, I will keep this set just because do not want to deal with the shipping issue, but will stay loyal to PLAN TOYS. We own quite a few toys by this company and they are all great and natural. No disapointments here.

I have purchased several of the Melissa and Doug brand play food items. I caught this item on sale and thought I would try this brand. This set of food items doesn't really make sense in terms of proportion or categorization. For example, there is a whole pizza that is the same size as the tomato. A few of the items are made to be "cut", which is neat, but not all the items are made that way, and the product is not manufactered in a way that allows you to put the items together. For example, there are ingredients that might make a sandwich, but the product doesn't allow you to build the sandwich. Perhaps this wouldn't be an issue to me if I hadn't already purchased some of the Melissa and Doug sets which have velco and allow you to stack the ingredients together.
All in all, this product is ok but I would recommend you spend your money on a Melissa and Doug food set. My son has the pizza set, slice and bake cookie set, and grill set, and he plays with them all.

These are MUCH better than the junk from Melissa and Doug. Nice assortment of different food items with different shapes and textures. All smooth edges and no concerns for safety--especially the lead content of the paint since they (the paints) are imported from Germany. My daughter loves to pretend to put jam on the toast and fry up some eggs!

I got this for my 15 month old. I like the fact that the paint is made out of "soy paint" and is safe for my baby. She likes to "cut" the vegetables and gets excited to see that one vegetable has become two pieces. She can cut the pieces and put them into her pot and "cook". She's still learning how to cook, but in the meantime, these pieces are very good for her to learn about food. The pieces are very sturdy and well polished. I like the way they feel and the size is very good for a toddler. Overall, I'm very happy with this set and I'm glad that my baby likes to play with it.
