small parts warning Oct 05, 2010
By David Rubenstein I do not own this item, but am passing on information that a neighbor just had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her preschooler to remove the red cylinder from his throat. Let's be cautious, folks.

Cute wooden train Jan 07, 2008
By Aislinn Jones My 16 month old fell in love with trains after staying in a vacation hotel near a train yard. I thought this would be a great holiday toy for him, especially since we're ring to avoid bringing any more plastic toys into our home. I'm not sure if the train counts as a success. He likes watching Mommy & Daddy roll it around him, but quickly loses interest when he rolls it himself. I think this is probably because the cars are held together by magnets and fall apart pretty easily. Pushing a train with 4 cars is fun, but not so much fun if you have only one car within 15 seconds.
The train is very well made though there are some small parts as other reviewers have indicated. I am very happy with the quality and durability of this toy. Perhaps my son needs to grow into it a bit more and learn to be more gentle in pushing it. In the meantime, it makes a bright and cheerful addition to his nursery.

Toot Toot! Oct 05, 2007
By Catty Catt McCatt
"Meow!"
My 1 year old loves this toy, it's bright and cheery, durable and well made.
Unfortunately I had to confiscate the little cylinder blocks as he was sticking the them almost completely in his mouth then toddling around, the thinner ones caused me the most concern.

Dangerous small parts--but love HABA generally Feb 08, 2011

My husband and I were doubtful when we opened this beautiful wooden train set we purchased for our son's first birthday (this is for 1-3 year olds, according to the box) and noticed the size of the four little cylindrical pegs that fit into one of the train cars. I've never known a one year old who doesn't stick everything into his mouth, especially the smallest items...
I decided to read reviews online, and wish I had prior to our buying this, as several parents warn against these pegs and one parent apparently had to do the heimlich maneuver on her child (see other reviews here). When someone gave us a "No-Choke Testing Tube," I stuck each peg in, and the red and purple just barely peek out over the top of this, meaning that they passed the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission test by about a fraction of an inch. It seem strange that a company as apparently caring as HABA would choose to include pegs that come within a fraction of an inch of failing the Safety Commission test, and then wouldn't recall or warn about the pegs after hearing of the parent whose child actually choked on one. Huh.
Anyway, that's a long-winded way of saying I removed the pegs from the train car (kind of sad-looking to have a bunch of empty holes in one train car, but even more sad to leave pegs on which a baby could choke in those holes, merely for aesthetics). The other train cars are intact, and my son particularly likes the wooden guy that fits into the red car, but I think it's generally nice to buy a product that you trust entirely, and this is not that. We have other HABA items that are great and don't seem to have any choking hazards...
Wish HABA would address this! Lengthen those pegs, HABA!
