Perfect Little Flexible Doll for Dollhouse Play Aug 27, 2010
By goonius A few years ago my daughter received a dollhouse doll similar to this one named "Maggie" by a company called Galt. It was, of course, manufactured in China - which gave me very little worry since she rarely played with it. But in recent times she has developed an affection for it, and has begun wanting to take it to bed. I began to worry about the cloth-encased bendy metal in the arms in legs. After all, if the China-made metal jewelry often contains nasties like lead and cadmium, what are those metal parts made of?
So, I began to look for a reasonable replacement.
The Kathe Kruse doll house dolls are similar in many ways. They are roughly the same height (these 'child' sized dolls are a little smaller at 3.5" tall). Their arms and legs are posable, so the doll can be made to sit or stand, or take on really any other position you'd wish. However, one of the difficult aspect of purchasing these Kathe Kruse dolls is that there is little no information about the dolls themselves. There's plenty about the company: They are made in Germany, using natural materials and cloth certified by Oeko-Tex Standard 100. And all that is great, but what about the actual dolls?
So, I'll attempt to shed some light on the details that cannot be seen.
First, it is definitely worth mentioning that the clothing is sewn to the dolls and is not removable. Even if you were to remove the threads which attach the clothing, there is no elastic in the waist of the pants and the shirt collar is cinched by the attaching threads and would essentially come apart if clipped. This was a disappointment to my daughters, who feel all dolls must immediate be undressed upon arrival to our home.
The clothing, however, is very attractive. The clothes on this doll are 100% cotton jersey and are very soft.
The shirt can be lifted to expose the doll's body. The inner part of the doll's body is wooden, and this is covered by a layer of flesh-tone cotton, so the doll looks 'real' beneath her clothes. The arms, save for the small wooden hands, are made entirely of cotton rope-covered wire, which is strung directly through the doll's body. Often moving one arm will move the other because they are connected within the body. However, by holding one arm still while positioning the other, you can position them separately. The feet and legs are wood, with a small area near the body that is wire-covered rope. This gives the doll greater stability, so she will easily stand on her own. All of her wooden parts are completely unfinished, natural wood.
The dolls have wool-stuffed cotton heads, with realistic facial contours and painted features, and super-soft wool hair, which is attached wig-style to the doll's head. The hair is easy to muss, and begins to frizz at the crown even with gentle play, hence the deducted star on durability.
These doll are actually very well made. In comparison, our Maggie doll had gobs of glue on various parts. These dolls on the other hand show meticulous attention to detail. They don't have any flaws - nor should they, costing nearly $20 each.
Are they worth the cost? Mostly yes. I have reason to believe that the Kathe Kruse company is not cutting corners in the materials and labor department. I think a product made in Germany by a reputable company is a better bet in the safety department. For me, the piece of mind is worth every penny. My daughters each love their dolls (they each received one), and immediately named them and began to assimilate them into their little play-pretend world. And they are lovely. I do wish their clothes came off, and that the style chosen for their hair was a bit more durable.
I would definitely buy them again, and I feel sure that if my daughter's interest in them continues, we will buy more members of the family. Especially, as I see they are now offered at a few dollars less than we purchased them for - and with free shipping through Amazon. The current deal being offered is better than any you'll find elsewhere.
My daughter loves this dolly! :) Jan 27, 2010
By M. Glassey This doll is very well made and will last a long time. My daughter plays with it almost everyday and I couldn't be more satisfied!
