Fun for baby Jun 10, 2010
By Delia Linnet My now-7 month-old baby loves these toys. The bucket, scoop and watering can are a little smaller than I expected but that makes them easier for a baby to use them. The squirters aren't as cute as some (the crab is pretty cute) but they have a huge appeal for her and she plays with them for a long time, chewing on one after the other. She loves the scoop as well. I think the watering can is funny-looking but she certainly has fun with it. All the pieces are very sturdy and well-designed. This is petty, but it bugs me that some of her octopus toys have only 6 legs, but in this set the octopus has 8! I first got some bath toys for our then 4 month old baby at Wal-Mart, but then I read in Slow Death By Rubber DuckSlow Death by Rubber Duck: How the Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects Our Health how these products are 40% phthalates, a chemical that changes the way our hormones work, interferes with metabolism, and increases the risk of birth defects, premature birth, premature puberty, insulin resistance, obesity, endometriosis, abnormalities in male reproductive development and low sperm counts, asthma, allergies, and possibly an increased risk of cancer. Phthalates in toys have been banned in Europe since 1998. These toys are free of BPA, PVC and phthalates. Another reviewer of a different Spielstabil toy complained they weren't really phthalate-free because of being made in China. I asked the company and they said that most of their stuff is made in Germany but the things made in China are still non-toxic and have to undergo testing to prove they are free of these chemicals, so I think they really are among her safest toys. The squirters are from China, the bucket and scoop made in Germany. You can't get away from phthalates--they are released from flooring, present in fragrances added to products, etc.--but I try to minimize our baby's exposure to harmful things. These are fun, too, among her favorite toys, and she plays with them for a long time.
Compact little set Jul 08, 2011

We have this brand's sand toy backpack, which is great for my 2 year old twins at the beach, but we need something else (two kids, two sets, otherwise WWIII starts!), and I opted for a water set rather than a sand set since our "sand" here at Lake Tahoe is really pulverized granite and not very powdery. This little set was surprisingly small when it arrived, bit now that we have used it, I'm glad it's so compact. The kids love the cute watering can, the spoon, and especially the three squeeze toys in cute animal shapes. We took it on vacation to Colorado and it doubled as a bath toy. Good buy!
Smaller than it looks Jan 13, 2011
By M. Jeffries I bought this toy because I'm concerned about chemicals in toys and this one is BPA, PVC, and pthalate free. My son likes this toy and still plays with it, but I was surprised at how small it was when it arrived. The watering can is very difficult to use because it has a small opening to fill, and the holes are on the top of the spout instead of the end. Also, the squirt toys I received are not the same as the ones pictured, and, unless I overlooked it when I bought it, that was not noted in the description (we got an orange crab, green turtle, and blue whale).
This toy is okay, but I probably wouldn't buy it again.
